The Legend of Spearfinger: A Cherokee Tale of Horror

There is a Cherokee legend of a creature known as Spearfinger U'tlun'ta. This horrific being is said to have a long, sharp finger that she uses to stab her victims in the heart. Her bloodthirsty rampage has led her to be feared by many in the Cherokee Nation. Some say that she is the spirit of death, come to claim those who have sinned against nature. Others say that she is simply a monster, born of dark magic and evil intentions. No one knows for sure what Spearfinger U'tlun'ta truly is, but all agree that she is a force to be reckoned with.
What is Spearfinger?
Spearfinger is an eerie figure out of Cherokee folklore in the Southern United States. She shapeshifts into various forms including a beautiful old woman, but her real identity is a bent and withered crone with an index finger made of sharp flint. Her goal is to lure children or unsuspecting adults away from their camps to do her dirty work, like eating human livers. As soon as she grabs them, her impenetrable finger will stab them--so watch out! Though scholars are still divided on its truthfulness, some claim that Spearfinger could be an evil spirit from ancient days who has just resurfaced in modern times; others say that it’s just an old Cherokee tale that we should enjoy for its entertainment value only. Either way, this myth really captures our imagination and get us thinking about what other strange creatures may be lurking in woodland shadows!
How does U'tlun'ta" translates from Cherokee?
The mysterious and intriguing phrase 'U'tlun'ta' has a surprisingly straightforward meaning: it translates directly from Cherokee to English as 'the one with pointed spear'. The phrase originates from the folklore of the Cherokee people and has been adapted into modern Urban Legends about strange creature sightings. But, regardless of where and how you may come across 'U'tlun'ta', its literal translation paints a grim and evocative image - one that can only be interpreted by the person hearing or reading it. For a cryptozoology enthusiast to stumble upon this phrase is like discovering a hidden clue in their search for cryptic creatures!
What does Spearfinger look like?
It's said that Spearfinger is a dangerous creature of Cherokee legend - one who looks like an old, ugly woman. By day, she'll masquerade as an elderly lady gathering medicinal herbs in the mountainside, but by night she turns into a horrifying monster with razor-sharp fingernails capable of carving out her victims' livers. Her finger is longer than the rest and sharper than any blade, so if you see a woman whose thumb has four joints instead of three, don't think twice - run!

Spearfinger sightings
There have been numerous reports of the spectral hag known as Spearfinger roaming the hills of Appalachia and elsewhere across North America. Despite the fact that sightings are incredibly difficult to come by, with most recorded incidents happening in rural, isolated areas far from civilization, some cryptozoology and urban legends bloggers like myself swear by the existence of this creature. Her descriptions vary- sometimes she has shining needlelike fingers that can pierce human skin like knives, other times her hands are normal and her body is said to resemble a dried leaf. What remains consistent is how dangerous she is said to be if you fall into her gaze she will devour your internal organs or steal pieces of your soul. If all this isn't enough to make you wary when walking past the deep woods at night then surely the chilling prose attached to this creature's legend will be; "Awake, not the sleeping cuttyhunk (an old spelling for Spearfinger), She shall clasp thy breath away". A fitting warning indeed!
Is Spearfinger still alive?
People have been asking if Spearfinger, the mythical Cherokee witch who lurked in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, is still alive for centuries. Some say a great misty creature was seen near the entrance to Cataloochee Valley and others swear they've seen her walking along a mountain ridge with glowing eyes and pointing fingers. While I'm usually of the opinion that urban legends can't live forever, I'm not so sure about Spearfinger. After all, few have been able to uncover definitive proof of either her existence or her demise. Her story has been passed down from generation to generation in whispers and tales, hinting at a creature powerful enough to still be alive today as it lurks in the shadows of the Great Smoky Mountains. Could she still be residing there, ready to snatch unsuspecting victims with her long bony finger? All we can do is wonder and keep our eyes peeled when walking through these woods!
Conclusion
The mysterious phrase 'U'tlun'ta' has a surprisingly straightforward meaning, translating directly from Cherokee to English as ‘the one with a pointed spear’. Spearfinger is the dangerous creature of Cherokee legend that lurks in the Great Smoky Mountains and beyond - an old woman by day, but a monster at night. While sightings are rare, her presence continues to be felt through stories passed down generations and still remains shrouded in mystery. Is she real? Could she still be alive today? Only time will tell! Until then, it's best to keep our eyes peeled when walking through these woods so we don't become prey for this legendary witch.

I'm not normally much of a Bigfoot fan (I'm more of a Mothman and Fresno Nightcrawlers girl) but the cute design of this one absolutely stole my heart! The big eyes are too adorable, it's just the right size and shape for cuddling, and the fur is soft without shedding or matting like some other long furs do. I'll definitely be back for more plushies from this shop!
We are OBSESSED with our plushie. The only problem is now we need MORE. Super soft, excellent handmade quality. These “haunted pants” are the perfect adorably creepy addition to any collection. We can’t wait to get our hands on more! So glad to have found these!
I love my Mothman plushy! He’s so cute and fuzzy. The wings are the best part, so soft! The only problem is keeping them away from my pups! (And the catastrophic bad omen of having him nearby) 🤣
This Fresno Nightcrawler Stuffed Cryptid is the perfect companion for camping trips. It is cozy, charming, and adventurous. It looks like it belongs in the woods and blends in with nature. I took a photo of it on a tree and it looked amazing. It is a great gift for anyone who loves camping and cryptids. I adore it and recommend it.
